I like weaving with a limited palette - black, brown and white, although in this work, I have in fact used over 30 different colours.

Ganymede

Worked in wool on black cotton warp of five threads per centimetre. The ideas came from considering Outer Space, which is the theme for another exhibition I am working for.

'Ganymede', planet Jupiter's giant moon, was the inspiration for this piece and was worked from a Hubble photograph of Ganymede found in a calendar. I have tried to represent a spherical shape revolving in space.

Based on a carved image in the Oceana exhibition at the Royal Academy. Texture as well as colour blends convey the character of the subject. I enjoy using the same yarns in a more graphic representational way.

Based on the textile sketchbook workshop I did at CityLit - looking at our City. There were so many cracked pavements which were very interesting to weave.

White Hole

Worked in wool on black cotton warp of five threads per centimetre. The ideas came from considering Outer Space, which is the theme for another exhibition I am working for.

For 'White Hole', I imagined that if such a thing existed it would contain all the colours of white light so the design is made up from the primary and secondary colours of light. Technically it was an interesting exercise in keeping all the circles accurate.

Chroma Spiral

I imagined Chroma: Spiral as a broad brushstroke winding out from the centre in a spiral. As the brush travels it picks up some of the next colour in the colour wheel and drops a little of the previous one. When I wove it the journey was reversed, so it travelled from the outer edge, inwards towards the centre.

Ring Nebula

The colours in the photographs on which these two tapestries' colours are based are said to be approximately true. The colour images were assembled from black-and white photos taken through different colour filters. Blue isolates emission from very hot helium. Green represents ionised oxygen. Red shows ionised nitrogen, which is radiated from the coolest gas.
The Ring Nebula tapestry colours are approximate to a photo image; the twin Bubble Nebula images are taken from separate light filters.
The tapestry is stretched over a stiff board and backed with a cotton sheet. Attached with Velcro to mounts made for exhibition purposes.
