Jury Process

This will be a juried exhibition and we are delighted to have three jurors who will select work to display. The images they receive will be anonymised beforehand so they won’t know who has submitted work and their final choices will be based on the exhibition criteria and a checklist which each juror will fill out independently.

Our jurors are:

Joan Baxter

Inspired by the landscapes and heritage of the far north of Scotland where she lives, Joan Baxter uses the ancient technique of tapestry weaving to explore her world.
Her work is designed to be subtle, thoughtful and subliminal and its intention to speak powerfully to people on an emotional level. The landscapes of the far north have a particular minimal beauty and are strongly atmospheric. Tapestry designs rarely start with a beautiful view.

Fiona Hutchison

As an artist and teacher working predominantly, but not exclusively in Gobeiln tapestry, content is paramount in the development of her work. Fiona aims to create a dialogue between the subject, materials and viewer. While traditional techniques and craftsmanship are important it is the idea, the vision and her hand that defines the work.
Growing up in the city, but by the water’s edge, the sea is enormously important in Fiona’s life. Whether from personal experience or research, her aim is not to create a representation of the seas and oceans but something experienced, a deeply felt personal connection. It is as much a self-portrait as it is a reflection on the sea.
Techniques and materials play an increasingly important role in the development of her deas. The manipulation of traditional tapestry and textile techniques provides her with a creative language in which to explore her ideas. As we are all becoming more aware of issues around resources and sustainability, this has led to Fiona discovering a wealth of recycled or repurposed materials with which to work.

Caron Penney

Caron Penney is a Master Tapestry Weaver and Director at Atelier Weftfaced. Her tapestries are grid locked: a love of pattern, systems, and repetition are central to her hand woven textiles. At the core of her work are references to street architecture and structural comparisons between the warp and the weft. Surrounded by pattern, the urban landscape feeds Penney’s interest in humanity and her ideas develop through observation, photography and sketches.
She studied Constructed Textiles at Middlesex University, graduating with a BA (Hons). After working as a professional weaver for twenty years she opened her own studio in 2013.
Penney uses the same limited range of materials traditionally used to make handwoven tapestry, worsted wool and gilt gold threads, with the addition of dyed cotton warp which edge the finely woven pieces. She has a deep understanding of hand woven tapestry techniques and her resulting tapestries continue to be embraced by the training she acquired as a professional weaver.
